About Me

Hi, I'm Virginie! 👋

I help French learners speak with confidence and finally sound like themselves in a second language. Like a real person. Not a translation of who they are in their native tongue.

My Story

From the Mayenne to a Global Classroom

I grew up in the Mayenne, deep in the French countryside, where French was simply the language we spoke at home, in school, at the bakery. Years later I went to university to study linguistics, and that is where I discovered my own language from the outside. For the first time I started noticing how it actually worked. All the patterns and small rules I had never thought about, because I had grown up inside them.

I went on to earn my Master's degree in Teaching French as a Foreign Language (FLE). Five years of methodology, didactics, and the science of how a brand-new learner actually picks up a language. That degree changed everything for me. It taught me how to teach French to someone who has never heard a word of it, and make it feel like discovery instead of homework.

Birmingham, UK. Where it all started.

🇬🇧 Three years in Birmingham.

My very first teaching post was in the UK, in Birmingham. I taught French there for three years. British students gave me the perfect first challenge. Reserved. Grammar-focused. Often anxious about getting things wrong.

That is where I built the foundation of the methodology I still use today. Build confidence first. Perfect the grammar second. Speak first, polish later.

🇧🇷 Then six years in Brazil.

From the UK I moved to Brazil. I ended up staying for six years. I taught at the Alliance Française, the gold-standard French institute that exists in over 130 countries.

That is where my teaching really came to life. Brazilian students are warm, fast, expressive. They will not let you hide behind a textbook. If you cannot make them laugh in French, you have already lost them.

Virginie teaching online students from Lisbon

Today: a global classroom, one Zoom at a time.

🇵🇹 In Lisbon since 2022. Online, everywhere.

I have lived in Lisbon since 2022. My classroom is online. My students live everywhere. London, New York, São Paulo, Berlin, Sydney. Some are absolute beginners booking their first trip to Paris. Some are professionals preparing for a B2 exam. Some just want to read Camus in the original.

What they all have in common: nobody wants to memorize a textbook. They want to actually speak French. That is what I help them do, every single week.

Philosophy

Why "La Prof" Virginie?

Because "prof" in French is what students call the teacher who actually likes them.

The word "teacher" comes loaded for most adults. Bad grades. Strict rules. The feeling that you were always two steps behind. So when I started teaching online, I did not want to be your teacher. I wanted to be your prof. The one who calls you by your first name, knows what you are working towards, and laughs when you get something hilariously wrong.

Most adults come to me convinced French is too hard for them. After a few weeks they realize it was never the language. It was the way they were taught. I am trying to undo that, one student at a time.

"The limits of my language mean the limits of my world."

Ludwig Wittgenstein
Teaching Approach

Real conversations. Real progress.

My method comes down to four things you'll feel in every lesson.

Real-life dialogues

No "the cat is on the table." We work with the French you would actually overhear at a café in Lyon, in a Parisian office, at a Sunday lunch with the in-laws.

Speak first, polish second

Mistakes are how you learn. You will never feel judged in my class. You will just feel braver every week.

Repetition that does not feel like repetition

The same chunks come back in new contexts every week. By month three they are not vocabulary anymore. They are yours.

Fun is non-negotiable

If a class is not enjoyable, it does not stick. We laugh, we tell stories, we talk about real life. French is the medium, never the obstacle.

Credentials

The Receipts.

A passion for teaching is the most important thing. The paperwork helps too.
